People have dreams to be successful in life but they are not aware of the hard work. Chris Gardner, from the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness” and Walter Younger in the novel, The Raisin in The Sun by Lorraine Hansberry struggle with this problem in pursuing their dreams. “The Pursuit of Happyness” set in San Francisco in the 1980’s, focused on Chris Gardner, a man without money, who was pursing his dreams to make a better life for him and his family. The Raisin in The Sun, set in Chicago in the 1940’s, was about Walter Younger who was also pursuing a dream to open a liquor store to provide for his family.
Although many people pursue their dreams, what helps make a person reach their goals is a positive attitude, intelligence and perseverance as evidence but both Chris Gardner and Walter Younger. Walter is a very negative man; in many ways everything he says is unnecessary. His attitude is not positive, which is key to being successful in pursuing his dreams. This is evident when Walter says “There ain’t no cause- there ain’t nothing but taking in this world, and he who takes most is smartest and it don’t make a damn bit of difference”(Hansberry). Unlike Walter, Chris Gardner is very positive person.
He always had something good to say. He even tries to show his son to be a positive person when he says, “don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. ”(Gardner). He knows the effect of a positive attitude and it shows in what is doing to improve his life. Chris has a good outlook throughout the entire story. He knows no matter how hard things get they can always get better. If Walter had the same outlook on life he could be just as successful as Chris. Chris Gardner is naturally a smart boy, and he had the intelligence.
Having natural intelligence can give someone the extra burst they need to get to the point in their life when they are happy, and made their dreams come true. When he talks, he sounds more intelligent than the most. In the beginning of the movie when Chris is being evicted from his apartment he says, “happiness is something that someone can only pursue and maybe it can never happen. No matter what”(Gardner). Clearly Chris is very intelligence. He is able to work on his pursuit to happiness in an intellectual way and deeper level because of his intelligence.
On the other hand, Walter only worries about getting money and thinks that happiness will follow. When George comes over to pick up Beneatha Walter says, “I know I ain’t nothing in this world as a busy as you colored college boys with fraternity pins and white shoes” (Hansberry). His negative comment illustrates that he has something against people with a good education or people who are intelligent. His lack of respect for people with intelligence shows that he does not have what it takes to pursue his dreams. Perseverance is the final step to becoming successful in achieving happiness.
Chris never gives up on his dreams of being happy. He said, “It’s okay to fail, but you can’t quit on yourself. ”(Gardner). He has the perseverance to make it. If Walter had the same attitude, he could have gone as far as Chris did. Walter shows throughout the story that he does not have what it take to attain his dream. He shows this when he says, “baby, don’t nothing happen for you in this world ‘less you pay somebody off! ”(Hansberry). He thinks the only way to be successful in making his dreams come true is by having money, and using it in the wrong way to make his dreams come true.
People all over the world strive to make their dreams come true and be happy. Being successful takes a lot of work. A positive attitude is one of the essential attributes someone need to in order to make it in life. Another one is your intelligence and how well you use it to your advantage. Last but not least having perseverance is very important to being successful. With these three characteristics there should be nothing holding you back from achieving your dream It’s is hard to accomplish but it is possible for people just like Chris Gardner.
